The 2018 BMW X3 debuted with a bigger footprint, new features, and updated styling last year, and it was only a matter of time before the changes made their way to the related X4 fastback SUV. Now, the second-generation 2019 BMW X4 has been revealed, offered in your choice of M40i and xDrive30i trim levels.
The new X4 offers a wider track, an upgraded suspension, new safety features, and a modern interior. Inside, the cabin looks a lot like the one in the new X3, and is somewhat roomier than before with 1 inch of extra legroom in the rear. Several different trim line options are available, and all of them feature mood lighting in at least six flavors. BMW’s midsize fastback SUV also gets a larger panoramic moonroof and a three-zone climate control system for 2019.
Up front, the new X4 receives bigger kidney grilles, headlights with new LED accents, a redesigned front valance, and horizontally oriented LED foglights. As before, the roofline slopes toward the rear, where new LED taillights and twin exhaust tailpipes can be found.
“The second-generation BMW X4 brings together a distinctive, dynamic silhouette with a clear, pared-back use of forms,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW Senior VP of group design, in a statement.
BMW says the new X4 grows 3 inches in length, bringing total length to 187.5 inches, or 1.6 inches longer than the new X3. BMW also added 2.1 inches to the wheelbase and an extra 1.4 inches of width.
Under the hood, the BMW X4 xDrive30i packs a twin-scroll turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that offers 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. BMW claims it can sprint from 0-60 mph in a respectable 6 seconds. Just like last year’s model, the 2019 BMW X4 M40i features a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that offers 355 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds, according to BMW. Both models are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, and come standard with rear-biased all-wheel drive. Drivers can choose from Sport, Sport+, Comfort, Eco Pro modes, and there’s a launch control function for those who want to get the most performance off the line.
Off-roaders will appreciate the X4’s 8 inches of ground clearance, which allows for a fording depth of 19.6 inches. Meanwhile, the SUV features a break over angle of 19.4 degrees and approach and departure angles of 25.7 and 22.6 degrees, respectively, which could come in handy on the trail or along the streets of lower Manhattan.
Prices for the 2019 BMW X4 starts at $51,445x for the Drive30i, and $61,445 for the M40i. The new models will be available at dealers in July.
