But it’s only available with the eight-speed automatic
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler might not look much different than its predecessor, but underneath its familiar sheetmetal, it’s almost entirely brand new. The 3.6-liter V-6 does carry over, but Jeep promises an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 will be available soon. We’re still not sure when those engines will officially go on sale, but if the latest report is accurate, we at least know what the turbo-four will cost.
Over on JL Wrangler Forums, one of the site’s administrators claims to have received a tip that the 2.0-liter turbo is now available for dealer orders. Assuming the source is correct, that’s a good indication that we won’t have to wait long to see turbocharged Wranglers on dealer lots. But perhaps more importantly, the post also claims the turbo will be a $1,000 option.
For buyers who want the 2.0-liter’s extra torque and presumably better fuel economy, that’s really not a bad price. Sadly, during our first drive, Jeep told us that the turbo-four will only be available with the eight-speed automatic, so adding that $2,000 option brings the total price up to $3,000. In our experience, the turbocharged four-cylinder pairs well with the auto. Turbo lag isn’t an issue, and it can rock crawl so well, few people will miss the naturally aspirated V-6. The 2.0-liter turbo is rated at 268 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, or 35 lb-ft more than the Pentastar.
Whether it’s worth the extra $3,000 or not, however, will likely come down to fuel economy. We still don’t know what kind of gas mileage the four-cylinder Wrangler will get, but if it’s significantly better than the V-6 Wrangler’s 19 or 20 mpg combined rating, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the turbo become the most popular engine in the Wrangler lineup.
