Whether you do it to save on gas or simply because you care about the environment, hybrid sedans that deliver good gas mileage have become quite popular. And having a hybrid powertrain doesn’t necessarily mean you’re driving something boring. These days, electrified sedans often have more power and usually more torque than their internal combustion counterparts, despite their using less fuel. Honda Insight
The Honda Insight is essentially the hybrid version of the Civic, and after driving a long-term example for a year, we found its “handling to be tidy, light, and even a bit sporty.” With 55/49 mpg city/highway, the Insight has very good gas mileage as well as sweet styling. Its great packaging also makes the cabin very spacious, and the flat-fold seats even allowed us to transport surf boards (quite often).
Toyota Corolla Hybrid
With the new-generation Corolla, Toyota has really broadened the range. From a hatchback to a hybrid to the traditional Corolla, the compact sedan is available in different shapes and powertrains for those who have different needs. With 53/52 mpg, the Corolla Hybrid positions itself as one of the hybrid sedans with the best mpg in addition to being decently equipped. As proof of its fuel efficiency numbers, the EPA estimates you will spend only $600 per year on gas.
Toyota Camry
The Toyota Camry is one of the most popular sedans in the U.S., and its hybrid powertrain has been widely received among buyers. The EPA rates the Toyota Camry LE at 53/52 mpg, making it one of the hybrid sedans with the best mpg. Those numbers also put the Camry at the top of the chart in the midsize hybrid sedan segment—an added plus being that it offers one of that group’s roomiest interiors.
Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
We recently got a chance to drive the 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and were impressed by its quietness, style, and technology. Hyundai made changes to the powertrain from the previous generation, helping its fuel economy numbers to jump to 50/54 mpg for the Blue trim. Other Sonata trims (SEL and Limited) deliver 45/51 mpg owing to their bigger wheels, tires, and extra equipment. The new Sonata Hybrid definitely impressed us with its good gas mileage.
Honda Accord Hybrid
We’ve praised the Honda Accord Hybrid for its great styling, premium material quality on its higher trims, and fantastic value. The hybrid powertrain also brings good fuel efficiency to the Accord, making it one of the hybrid sedans with the best mpg. Delivering 48/47 mpg, the Accord falls right in line with the Hyundai Sonata SEL and Limited, and the Camry XLE and SE. The Accord’s interior space, packaging, and versatility also make it one of the best midsize sedans in the market.
Lexus ES 300h
Luxury sedans have also merged to the electrified world. The Lexus ES 300h delivers 43/44 mpg, with the EPA estimating that equates to about $700 for gas per year. With its roomy cabin and upgraded interior, the ES’ cockpit is not only a nice place to be, but its smooth hybrid powertrain makes it quieter, too.
Toyota Avalon Hybrid
The Toyota Avalon and the Lexus ES are pretty much the same car under the skin, so it makes sense that both models have a hybrid variant. Just like the ES 300h, the Avalon Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter engine that works with an electric motor and battery to produce 215 hp combined. The result is the same 43/44 mpg as the ES 300h, and the Avalon Hybrid still offers a spacious and comfortable cabin.
Ford Fusion Hybrid
Although it’s on its way out, the Ford Fusion made the list of the hybrid sedans with the best mpg thanks to its 43/41 mpg. Its good gas mileage and decent interior space make the Fusion Hybrid a compelling choice, especially as dealers try to free up floorspace.
Kia Optima Hybrid
The current Kia Optima is about to be replaced by a new generation, with an all-new sedan coming soon. But assuming that the hybrid variant could take a little longer than the conventional version’s to arrive, the current Optima Hybrid still delivers decent fuel economy. At 40/45 mpg, the Optima Hybrid is right in line with the previous-generation Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. We expect the new Optima Hybrid to deliver similar numbers to the 2020 Sonata Hybrid.
Acura RLX Sport Hybrid
Applying its learnings from the RDX Sport Hybrid crossover, Acura extended the Sport Hybrid variant to its largest sedan—the RLX. Although its 28/29 mpg doesn’t sound as great as the rest of the models in this group, it still delivers pretty good gas mileage for a sedan that sends 377 hp to all four wheels.
Honorable Mentions
Although we’d classify the Hyundai Ioniq and the Toyota Prius as hatchbacks given the way their trunklids contain their rear glass, they deserve an honorable mention given their impressive fuel economy and popularity.
Hyundai Ioniq
How does 59 mpg sound? The Hyundai Ioniq Blue is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in the market, and it’s also affordable. At $24,155 and delivering 57/59 mpg, the Ioniq Blue is very attractive. There are other versions of the Ioniq (SE, SEL, and Limited), which don’t get the same fuel economy as the Blue, but at 55/54 mpg they’re still appealing.
Toyota Prius
A lot of people still think Prius when they hear the word “hybrid.” This Toyota has become a world leader in hybrid sales thanks to its great fuel economy numbers. The Prius is one of the hybrid cars with the best mpg, delivering 58/53 mpg. Although its styling might be a bit too much for some, we think it’s better-looking than its previous generation.
