Finally! A LEGO kit that lives its life a quarter-mile at a time. For $99.99, you can have your very own black 1970 Dodge Charger R/T just like Dominic Toretto’s from the Fast & Furious movie franchise. (You know, the juggernaut whose latest installment, F9, is delayed until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.) This all-new, nicely realized kit is being released under LEGO’s Technic line, and is made up of 1077 pieces—more than enough to keep you occupied while doing your part and staying inside.
The Charger is surprisingly substantial for so inexpensive a LEGO kit, measuring 15 inches long, 6 inches wide, and 4 inches tall. Other similarly sized scale Technic kits, such as those for the Porsche 911 RSR and new Land Rover Defender, run $149.99 and $199.99. There is even a large-scale Bugatti Chiron available for $349.99. So, Dom’s Charger is a relative steal, particularly for fans of the Fast & Furious series.
LEGO got all the details right, too. The muscle car’s big supercharged V-8 engine (which in real life is a fake!) features a chain-driven blower and intake stack, which both poke up through a hole in the hood. In the trunk, you’ll find two blue nitrous bottles, and on the rear bumper LEGO includes a sweet old-school California sunshine graphic license plate. The front wheels are steerable, and the doors, hood, and trunk all open. The interior includes a roll bar. But easily the coolest feature on the kit is its built-in wheelie stand, which deploys beneath the Charger to hold it in a (static) wheelstand.
Should Dom’s Charger call to you, it can join your family April 27, 2020. LEGO is taking preorders for the kits on its website now, although supplies are limited to two per customer for the time being.
