The standard F90-generation BMW M5 has already done much to erase the memory of the numb-feeling last-gen model, thanks to improved driving dynamics, a trick all-wheel-drive system with rear-drive mode, and 600 hp on tap. But BMW has more up its sleeve for the new M5, officially announcing the 617-hp 2019 BMW M5 Competition today.
The last M5 was available with a Competition Package that upped horsepower and delivered steering and suspension enhancements, but for the new generation BMW is making the Competition a separate model within the M5 lineup, just as it did recently with the M2 Competition. The 2019 BMW M5 Competition’s twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 pumps out 17 hp more than the standard supersedan (617 hp at 6,000 rpm). Peak torque remains 553 lb-ft, but it hits that peak over a wider range between 1,800 and 5,860 rpm (160 rpm higher than the regular M5). Meanwhile, the eight-speed automatic transmission has been specially tuned for the Competition model. These improvements amount to a 0-60 sprint of 3.1 seconds, according to BMW. Considering we clocked a non-Competition 2018 BMW M5 at 3.0 seconds, that estimate is likely conservative.
The M5 Competition also gets a model-specific M Sport variable exhaust system that changes tone depending on mode. In addition, the Competition receives suspension goodies like stiffer engine mounts, an M-specific Variable Damper Control system, a 5mm lower ride height than the regular M5, more negative camber in front, a stiffer rear anti-roll bar and revised mounting for the front anti-roll bar, ball joint-equipped toe links, and more. The M5 Competition gets six-piston fixed calipers standard in front, which clamp down on inner-vented rotors. Lightweight M carbon-ceramic brakes are optional. Underpinning the Competition are two-tone 20-inch forged M alloy wheels wrapped in 275/35R20 performance tires in front and 285/35/R20 rubber in the rear.
To help tell the Competition model apart from lesser M5s, BMW added gloss black accents to the door handles, mirrors, side M gills, rear spoiler, and window trim. There’s also an M5 Competition badge finished in gloss black. On the inside, the M5 Competition gets seat belts featuring the M division’s signature blue, purple, and red stripes. Meanwhile, the floor mats have been emblazoned with the M5 logo and the instrument cluster display shows a unique M5 Competition graphic on start up. Given how much we liked the regular M5, we’re excited to see if these changes can make an already great sports sedan even better.
