Based on the next-generation GLS
Last year, we reported that Mercedes planned to build a Maybach version of the next-generation GLS. At the time, we heard it would arrive by 2019, but since then, the Maybach SUV news has been nonexistent. Unless you count the G650 Landaulet, that is. Later this month, there’s a good chance that will change.
Today, Mercedes released a video on Twitter with the caption, “Luxury at its finest. Coming soon.” Since it’s meant to be a teaser, it doesn’t show the entire car, but if you look closely, there’s more to see than Maybach badges and quilted leather. Several shots show spacious rear seats with quite a bit of headroom, and about 23 seconds in, you can clearly make out a display showing what appears to be an SUV.

We also don’t expect this new Maybach to be a futuristic concept like the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet. The interior design uses some similar elements, but the steering wheel, switchgear, and infotainment controls all appear production-ready. Even if Mercedes calls it a concept, don’t expect much to change before the order list opens.
As the final slide shows, we won’t have to wait long to see the latest Maybach, either. It will be shown at Auto China 2018 in Beijing, which begins April 25.
