AMG boss has high hopes for the Project One
Mercedes is aiming high with its Project One hypercar. AMG boss Tobias Moers suggested the car could rival the all-time Nürburgring record set 35 years ago by the Porsche 956.
Moers told Autocar that it was “reasonable to speculate” that Project One would go after the 6-minute, 11.1-second record set at the 1983 Nürburgring 1000km by German driver Stefan Bellof. Achieving such a time in the Project One will require “finding the right driver,” Moers admits. If the Project One accomplishes a record time, it would be quite remarkable considering it’s destined to be a production car. The current production road car record was set by the Porsche 911 GT2 RS in 6 minutes, 47 seconds.
The Project One will come with a 1.6-liter V-6 and electric motors creating around 1,000 hp in total. Moers says that the car’s quoted output is only what its hybrid engine is making on the dynamometer currently, and that actual numbers would be greater but likely not exceed 1,100 hp. Top speed should exceed 217 mph.
A month ago, Moers revealed the Project One will generate half its weight in downforce. The model should scale in between 1,300 and 1,400 kg, or 2,866 and 3,086 pounds.
The Project One will sell for around £2.4 million, or around $3.3 million at today’s exchange rates. AMG has received 1,100 customer requests, but it only plans to make 275 copies.
