It’s been about two years since we first saw a disguised BMW X2 prototype on the road. Since then, it’s been teased relentlessly and even caught essentially undisguised. Today, though, BMW officially revealed the X2.
Unlike the other evenly numbered SUVs in the BMW lineup, the X4 and X6, the X2 doesn’t get a coupelike fastback roof. Instead, it has a much more conventional roofline that will be better for rear headroom and cargo capacity.
You can also still see a lot of the X2 concept that made its debut the 2016 Paris Motor Show in the final design. Several design elements that were probably never going to make it into the production version, such as the side-view mirrors, the lower fascia, and the rear bumper, have been changed. But if you look at both, you can still see the resemblance. BMW even decided to leave the roundel on the C-pillar.
Despite a name that suggests something bigger than the X1, the X2 is actually smaller than its crossover sibling. Both vehicles have the same wheelbase, but the X2 is 3.2 inches shorter and rides 2.8 inches lower than the BMW X1.
The cabin, meanwhile, appears to have been lifted right out of the X1 with only a few minor changes, such as the steering wheel. If you like the X1’s interior, that’s great, but if you don’t this probably isn’t the miniature crossover for you.
Under the hood, the X2 gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Matched with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, BMW says the X2 hits 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. BMW might offer a more powerful engine in the future, but for now, it appears the X2 xDrive28i will be the only one you can buy. And although 18-inch wheels are standard, 19-inch rims are available, as well.
Additionally, BMW offers an M Sport X package, which includes a sport-tuned transmission and paddle shifters, as well as differently styled bumpers and sportier trim pieces. It comes with 19-inch wheels as standard, but a 20-inch option is also available. You can also add adaptive dampers, an M-sport suspension, and an M spoiler if you want.
The X2 also comes with quite a few driver assistance features. Add the Driver Assistance package, and you’ll get lane departure warning, front collision warning, pedestrian warning, adaptive cruise control, parking assistance, a rear-view camera, automatic high beams, and speed limit information.
At the moment, however, BMW hasn’t said anything about pricing. Expect that to be announced closer to the X2’s on-sale date sometime in the spring of 2018.
