First car will use iStream platform
After 50 years in the vehicle design and engineering business, Gordon Murray is launching his own car manufacturing company. Gordon Murray Automotive will produce low-volume cars, and the first one to debut will be a lightweight flagship model.
The new company will complement Gordon Murray Design, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Murray has worked on a host of Formula 1 cars through the decades and is best known for designing the McLaren F1 road car.
“With our first new car, we will demonstrate a return to the design and engineering principles that have made the McLaren F1 such an icon,” Murray said in a press release.
The vehicles will use a new version of the iStream production process created by Gordon Murray Design. The iStream platform involves a lightweight, high-strength chassis that can accommodate multiple body styles by bonding different composite panels to the frame. It is said to lower the cost of vehicle production considerably, despite requiring lots of carbon fiber.
The iStream technology was used on the Yamaha Sports Ride concept that debuted back in 2015. That car weighed just around 1,650 pounds, showing off the lightweighting capabilities of iStream. Yamaha is bringing a new concept car to the Tokyo auto show this month, and it may also use the iStream process.
More information on Gordon Murray’s first new car will be made available on November 3.
