Last year, Mazda brought together 19 drivers from around the world to compete in an event called the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup Invitational. With competitors from the U.S., Japan, Australia, the U.K., Sweden, Poland, Germany, and Switzerland participating, it was the first time Mazda Motorsports had organized a truly international race for MX-5 Cup drivers. Today, the Japanese automaker announced that the race is back, this time called the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup Challenge.

The two-race event will take place at Laguna Seca in October of this year, with the overall winner taking home $75,000. Second place will get $25,000, and third will get $10,000. The competition is open to all race car drivers except for the ones on Mazda Motorsports’ factory team. Interested drivers will, however, need an MX-5 Cup license in order to race.

“It is our intention to make the Global MX-5 Cup Challenge the pinnacle of spec sports car racing in the world. Last year, our focus was to get this event off the ground and to showcase our brand-new car to racers and media beyond the U.S. Now, it’s about showing everyone what the top racers in the world can do in our Global MX-5 Cup car,” said David Cook, the head of business development for Mazda Motorsports.
